How to Empower Communication Through Pain

Why Expressing Pain is a Good Thing?

When you type #prayfor on any social media platform, you immediately see an abundance of hashtags for the various recent disasters happening around the world. Just a few hashtags that went viral this month include #PrayforVegas, #PrayForTexas, #PrayforMexico, and many many more. Unfortunately, people around the world are in significant physical and emotional pain. Expressing pain is one of the critical steps to healing.

When a tragedy occurs, people immediately feel frustrated and upset. Expressing emotions such as pain is healthy and should not be repressed. This is why a safe environment is important to make individuals feel comfortable to express all emotions. Everyone is human and asking for help is not a weakness.

Holding in pain can have horrible effects. When someone suppresses their pain rather than releasing it, they often create more pain and allow their emotions to pile up. The first step to release pain is to admit and identify the pain. Being able to say: “I am in pain” enables you to seek help and find a solution rather than dwell in its symptoms.

At @SignShine I encourage my clients to state why are they in pain. I support and teach parents to show babies and children the sign of PAIN. One day, your child will show where they got an ouchie, or if their teeth hurt or they have the ear ache. It is magical. I am inviting you to read the miracle story of Nathaniel who was diagnosed with stage four cancer after he signed PAIN in one of SignShine’s classes.

Pain is signed with your two index finger tapping on each other next to the part of the body. Tap next to your ear for ear ache, tap next to your knee for a booboo on the knee, and even tap next to your heart for a broken heart.

Here are 3 ways to teach the sign PAIN:

1. When you get hurts (bump your leg onto the table or chair)
2. When another child is crying
3. When your child is in pain
