Sign Language is a visual language! We say this often at SignShine®. Much of what we take in of the world around us is visual! This is also true when you are communicating without sign language or even without words. You are always communicating something to the people you come in contact with. This involves your face, body, and yes! Even your hands!
So what are your hands saying when you aren’t speaking?!
- The Handshake:
A firm grip with palms vertical establishes a pleasant rapport, and sets both parties up for a positive exchange. In contrast, a dead fish loose grip handshake can lead to an awkward and unpleasant interaction, as it is often an indicator of a lack of self-confidence.
- Gestures (Not Sign Language):
Gestures can be dangerous if you aren’t careful! Cultural influence can make a friendly thumbs-up offensive, even a peace sign with the back of the hand can be hurtful. Opened handed gestures are generally the safest, unless of course you know and are using SIGN!
- Hand Position:
Revealing your palm to someone while you are talking indicates honesty and subconsciously encourages others to behave honestly as well. In contrast, clenched hands indicate a person may be feeling anxious and might be holding back their emotions or a negative reaction.
Remember body language is influenced by a number of factors: gender, cultural influences, and the level of familiarity between parties. These factors impact the production and interpretation of body language. So keep that in mind when sizing others up!
