Can TV watching affect your child’s sleep?

How much is too much?

Recent studies indicate that TV watching, especially in children, can be bad for their health. As more and more studies are being done, a direct correlation between the quality of sleep and passive television watching are being realized. In fact, your child can lose up to 7 minutes of sleep for every 1 hour of TV watching he/she does. And brace yourselves, parents of boys, because this phenomenon is even more pronounced in boys. The mere presence of TVs in the home typically will lead to a half hour of lost sleep nightly.

How is this possible?

For starters, often times the programs they are watching will arouse, awaken, or excite the brain, making it more difficult to go to sleep immediately afterward. It is for this reason, that there should be a ‘buffer’ between TV time and nap time, or sleep.

Secondly, TV watching can confuse your circadian rhythms. And TVs are not the only culprit here. In fact, most hand held devices such as phones, tablets, & personal gaming systems (basically any device that has backlighting) can disrupt your circadian rhythms and make it more difficult to get a restful night’s sleep.

The quality of one’s sleep should not be underestimated. It is every bit as critical to a healthy lifestyle as exercise and diet. For some reason, many of us disregard how truly important our sleep is to us, and that is not a wise thing to do. In fact, not allowing your body to properly rest can lead to some very serious health problems such as: behavioral issues, lack of focus/concentration, increased irritability, depression, and anxiety.

The average human spends roughly 1/3 of their life sleeping. The way I see it, we might as well get the best possible zzzzzzz’s while we’re at it!
